About This Project

BR2 Architecture were retained in January of 2012 by the Heartland Housing Foundation and the Alberta Social Housing Corporation to assist in the design of a new 90 unit affordable housing and assisted living facility to replace the existing Dr. Turner Lodge in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

The evolution of the new 90 unit assisted living facility is based on specific programmatic requirements, recommendations and opportunities identified through ongoing consultation with representatives of the Fort Saskatchewan Foundation, The City of Fort Saskatchewan, Heartland Housing Foundation and public consultation.

The existing Dr. Turner Lodge is a 58 bed facility located centrally in the City of Fort Saskatchewan. Although extremely well maintained, the existing facility no longer has the capacity or the amenities to meet the future needs of a growing seniors’ community in Fort Saskatchewan.

With the closure of the existing Fort Saskatchewan Hospital, the City of Fort Saskatchewan is developing a Master Plan to redevelop more than 10 acres in and around the Hospital Lands between 95th Street and 96th Street and 94th Avenue. In time, the existing Hospital will be demolished. As part of the Master Plan, 3.40 acres (1.38 hectares) has been allocated to accommodate the proposed new 90 unit affordable housing and assisted living seniors’ facility and a future Dementia Assisted Living (DAL)/ apartment addition.
