This facility provides the competitive gymnasium floor for Keyano College student athletes as well as the intramural and recreational use of the student and staff populations. The pressing need in the community for additional space has allowed Keyano College to partner with the local soccer associations and other user groups to make best use of the additional two fieldhouses. This provides space for community requirements and additional space for student use.
The fitness areas are intended to be shared between the student population and the general population to assist in meeting the great need for fitness/wellness space in the community.
The design vision was intended to provide a high quality space both internally and externally meeting the strict design guidelines of the Keyano Campus. The facility also fits within the overall master plan circulation as the campus expands.
The more simple bay spaces for the gymnasia and fieldhouse forms are placed to the north of the facility, backing on to the main utility plant. This screens the scale of these facilities from view by both the students and the public arriving at the facility. The front end of the building provides an attractive curved roof form that not only brings the participants into the facility but also provides an interior space in the fitness area of some scale and openness enhancing the energy level within the facility. Materials on the facade are consistent with the institutional nature of the facility as are those of the interior. The design solution provides substantial natural light into the interior core as well as superb participant and spectator visibility to all spaces within the facility. This enhances the opportunity for both the students and the general population to share the recreation and leisure activities with one another increasing both their participation and enjoyment.
