Ben Calf Robe – St. Clare School

In April 2019, BR2 Architecture and their consultant team was retained by Edmonton Catholic Schools as Prime Consultant, to design and administer the delivery of the proposed Ben Calf Robe – St Clare (K-9) Replacement School in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Ben Calf Robe – St Clare (K-9) School is acknowledged to be a Treaty 6 Territory – the ancestral and traditional territory of the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux as well as other Metis. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Metis and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional knowledge keepers and elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.

The identified scope of work for this project is to design and build a new 700 student, grades K-9, replacement school on the site of the existing school and remove the existing school with the completion of the new school. The proposed new replacement school is designed to be fully built-out and accommodate 700 students. No modular classrooms are to be added to the school.

The new Ben Calf Robe – St Clare (K-9) Replacement School is a unique facility designed to not only reflect a priority to integrate 21st Century Student Centered learning initiatives, but also a complementary First Nation learning program. The new school will replace an urban school in an older neighborhood in the city of Edmonton.

Along with 21st Century learning initiatives and First Nations programming, this new school will also reflect the multicultural make up of the neighborhood and community. The funding for this school is also unique in that funding for the core school is supported federally and provincially and also includes additional funding from the Edmonton Catholic School Board for Cultural and Servery Spaces to support the programs affected at this unique school. The grant funded area for this 700 student, K-9 replacement school is 6345 m2, with an estimated 600 m2 additional space provided through Edmonton Catholic Schools contribution.

A Solar Technology System (STS) will also be incorporated into the Ben Calf Robe – St Clare (K-9) Replacement School. The STS will include design, construction and installation of a solar system that provides a strong educational component and minimizes the overall payback period.
